Pick up any house mag, visit any design show, and you will observe that minimalism is on the way OUT, and colour, patterns and stencils are on the way IN. Some of the best fabrics and wallpapers around have a hand-stencilled look. The difference is that the designs are big, bold and somewhat ethnic, taking their inspiration from Ottoman embroidery or traditional Indian block print designs rather than the itsy-bitsy floral borders which were fashionable in the 80s.

To help you get back into stencilling mode I am featuring a classic Indian motif - the Kashmiri 'gul' or curling stylised leaf - from my Stencil Collection.

This is a 'freebie' for you to print off onto stencil card or acetate cut with a craft knife, and use to dramatise walls, fabric, furniture. The motif comes with a choice of traditional borders, to add emphasis.

Transform those tired looking cream painted walls with the leaf motif(enlarged to 20 cms or thereabouts) to stencil a repeat pattern over walls in a subtle shade like taupe, or cafe au lait. Space the motifs widely - 1 m apart - for maximum impact with minimum slog.

Use different combos of leaf and borders (see pix) to customise cheap fabrics (calico, hessian, canvas, felt) for cushion covers, curtains, throws.

Cheer up a 'neutral' kitchen with a vividly coloured border. It is all there ready for you to download. The e-book contains the pattern and all the guidelines you need to get going.
